Striving towards a Circular Economy is a principal objective of modern sustainable development, but on-the-ground practice in South Africa is often hindered by administrative, technological, and logistical hurdles, as well as a lack of skills.
Collected waste is sorted and reused/refurbished where feasible; otherwise, it is primarily shipped overseas for metal recovery, limiting opportunities for renewed local value addition and, in turn, the extent to which current activities can be considered truly circular.
